KNOW YOUR CUSTOMER
Breakfast seminar hosted by Headstrong and Informatica addresses risk, compliance and data management issues
Dallas, TX, October 1, 2009 -- As part of their continued commitment to leveraging joint expertise in the areas of compliance and customer data protection, Headstrong and Informatica Corp co-hosted a seminar on Sept 16, entitled "Know Your Customer -- Driving Value through Trusted Data". The event brought together IT consultants and corporate executives alike to discuss issues pertaining to client data protection, and the impact of master data management on risk and compliance. Experienced panelists from each side presented strategies and technologies on how to bolster protection of customer data.
Mike Destein, Informatica's Director of Solutions Marketing for master data management (MDM), kicked off the hour-long program. He began with an explanation of the importance of MDM, arguing that without such a foundation, a business doesn't truly know its customer. "Having accurate customer data available isn't just nice to have, it's critical in an era of ever-increasing regulations", Destein told the audience. He also explained how data quality and identity management fit into an overall MDM strategy.
Susan Palm, representing Headstrong's Compliance Practice and a 25-year veteran of the risk management industry, in turn gave the audience an overview of specific threats to customer data protection. She also enlightened listeners with a summary of new regulations emerging in response to those threats, and how IT departments across companies could adapt to the new rules.
During her talk, Susan shared several interesting statistics on upcoming trends and threats to customer data. For instance:
- The number of data breaches recorded by the Identity Theft Resource Center hit 656, a 47% increase over the previous year
- The average cost of a data breach is about $202 per customer record, which translates to $20 Million per 100,000 records
- The average organizational cost of data breach was $ 6.6 Million in 2008
- 70% of all security incidents come from trusted insiders
- 59% of ex-employees admit to stealing confidential company information, such as customer contact lists
- 62 percent of respondents to one survey by Ponemon Institute admitted to using live customer data in their test environments
Susan told the attendees that new regulations demand companies protect customer data even in non-production environments. Often, she noted, that can entail the use of a tool such as Informatica's Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) solution. Susan wrapped up the session with several questions from the audience, who seemed somewhat surprised and sobered at the alarming data security statistics she had presented.
Post presentation feedback from the audience showed a high level of identification with the issues presented and was appreciative of Headstrong's and Informatica's joint efforts in educating the market on customer data protection and management. The two companies are announcing several follow-on sessions in the coming months, as newer regulations take shape.
